This one-of-a-kind program will introduce new or emerging conductors to the wonderful world of orchestral conducting. Participants will receive instruction on score study, conducting technique, rehearsal technique, and more. Participants will also have podium time with an amateur orchestra, and also play in the orchestra while not on the podium. Please read requirements carefully, as this program is extremely limited in size to give each conductor sufficient podium time. Open to: Instrumentalists age 13 and up Requirements: Strong music reading skills, orchestra or band performance experience (for pianists: accompanying experience). No previous conducting experience required. Readiness: All applicants will take a short Zoom interview to determine readiness for the program. The directors will select participants who have the greatest likelihood of success given the short timeframe of the program. People historically excluded from conducting-- particularly women, girls, nonbinary musicians, and musicians of color-- are encouraged to apply.
Applications are now closed for the Conducting Institute.
