Our staff are familiar with the music and strategies of NJIO and can be a great addition to your practicing efforts. New Jersey Intergenerational Orchestra Mission Statement NJIO opens the world of orchestral music to diverse audiences and to musicians of all ages and varied skill levels, and fosters human connection through enriching educational experiences and performances. Vision Statement NJIO welcomes musicians of all ages and varying skill levels into a nurturing artistic environment. Through multiple ensembles, we encourage our diverse group of players to move along the musical continuum. Our members will grow musically from their NJIO interactions with musical professionals and each other, while advancing together towards the common goal of achieving artistic excellence within their capabilities. NJIO believes that music performances are beneficial to everyone and endeavors to serve our communities by presenting both affordable-admission and free orchestral concerts, outreach performances and special events throughout New Jersey.

NJIO's 2022-2023 Registration Ensemble Description We encourage our members to play in multiple ensembles. All large ensembles and outreach are included in the Youth, Adult, Senior, and Joint membership. Please select all ensembles that you would like to participate in. Alternatively, you may choose to register for Outreach only which would not include the large ensembles. Outreach: rehearses once a month on Wednesdays from 7 - 9 pm. String and C wind instruments are welcome. (flute, oboe, bassoon) Large Ensembles Prelude: Beginner ensemble. Rehearses Thursdays from 4:30 - 5:30. Open to strings and C winds. Intermezzo: Intermediate ensemble. Rehearses Thursdays 5:45 - 7pm. All instruments are welcome. Sympho ny: Advanced ensemble. Rehearses Thursdays 7:30 - 9:30 pm. All instruments are welcome. *Wind players, please email mtolentino@njio.org to learn about open spots.* Volunteer Opportunities Please list any areas of interest. NJIO benefits from the help and areas of expertise of members and families/friends. Volunteers also help keep our membership fees as low as possible. Staff biographies Home Sue On Anderson, Owner of On Music LLC., is a professional violinist and educator. She currently teaches private violin, viola, cello, and piano lessons at her studio in Denville, New Jersey. She has traveled across the nation to various Suzuki Institutes to teach violin, music history, and chamber music as well as providing professional developments for teachers in the public schools throughout the Tri-State area. Sue was a graduate of William Paterson University where she served as orchestra concertmaster under the direction of Sandra Dackow and also studied conducting with the New York Grand Opera’s founder and esteemed Juilliard professor, Vincent La Selva, and Grammy award-winning jazz violinist Scott Tixier. Like most musicians, she wears many hats and has a background in conducting orchestras, music business, and music education. She is currently the Music Director of the Rowan Youth String Orchestra at Rowan University’s Community Music School, the conductor of the Youth Ensemble at the Lakeland Youth Symphony Orchestra, and concertmaster with the New Jersey Intergenerational Orchestra. When Sue isn’t teaching or performing you can find her jigsaw puzzling, perfecting her macaron recipe, or binge-watching the latest tv shows. Vincent Novellino is a freelance violinist who performs with orchestras, musical theater companies, and at private engagements throughout the tri-state area. He is proud of his efforts to promote music education and appreciation to the next generation of musicians. A member of the New Jersey Intergenerational Orchestra since 1997, Mr. Novellino joined the staff in 2005 as a mentor and principal 2nd violinist. In 2004, Mr. Novellino joined the New Jersey Youth Theatre (formerly WYACT) as string coordinator and concert master for the summer productions staged at the New Jersey Performing Arts Center (NJPAC) and the Algonquin Theater in Manasquan. He maintains a private teaching studio in his Springfield home as well as at Newark Academy in Livingston, where he also serves as string coach. Mr. Novellino has an active performance schedule having performed in the pit orchestras of over 85 musical theater productions throughout the years. He frequently performs with Romanza Music, founded by NJIO cello coach Martin Steinberg, at chamber music functions and private events. A graduate of Cook College, Rutgers University, Mr. Novellino was a member of the Rutgers University Orchestra at Mason Gross. He has also performed with the Baroque Orchestra of New Jersey, Garden State Ballet Company, the Livingston Symphony, Plainfield Symphony, Bloomfield Symphony, and most recently with the Astoria Symphony in Queens, NY. In 2006, he toured with the Clay Aiken Christmas Concert Orchestra. Graham Cohen is currently pursuing a Master's Degree in Viola Performance at The Juilliard School of Music. He began composing at four and violin at five. In 2010, Graham was accepted to the Juilliard School's Pre-College division as a composition major, studying with Ira Taxin. Graham also studied viola with Kenji Bunch, and began with Toby Appel his current teacher, in 2013. Graham played in the New Jersey Youth Symphony, New Jersey Intergenerational Orchestra, Juilliard Pre-College Orchestras, MusicaNova Orchestra, and various chamber music ensembles throughout high school. He has been principal viola and coach for the New Jersey Intergenerational Orchestra since 2017, and plays in the viola section in the Juilliard Orchestra, the Chamber music program at Juilliard, and Juilliard415, the school's Historical Performance Ensemble. Graham's music has received performances across the globe, and he was the ASCAP Charlotte Bergen Award scholarship recipient in 2009. Robert Anderson earned a B.A. in Music Education from the Kean University Conservatory of Music, where he received the Nadia and Fritz Lambert Memorial Scholarship, a full tuition scholarship for four years. At Kean he studied violin with Brennan Sweet, Associate Concertmaster of the New Jersey Symphony Orchestra, and served as the University Orchestras Concertmaster. He has orchestral experience with various community orchestras, and has been playing with NJIO as the conductor of the Prelude Ensemble and the concertmaster of the Intermezzo Orchestra. Robert has been hired as an Elementary Orchestra teacher for Summit Public Schools serving three of the city’s elementary music programs. Beth Maliszewski is a violist, violinist and music educator originally from Chatham. She has been the conductor of the NJIO Prelude Ensemble and the Intermezzo Orchestra Violin II coach since September 2019. She is currently the Orchestra Director at Herbert Hoover Middle School in Edison, where she coordinates an annual concert festival with 350 students. Beth graduated from Mason Gross School of the Arts, Rutgers University with a degree in Music Education, summa cum laude. She then received a Master’s degree, with a concentration in Music Education, from Ithaca College. Beth has been a guest lecturer at the NJ Music Educators State Convention and Summer Conference. Born to two New Jersey music educators, Beth has been actively involved in music her entire life. She is happy and excited to be back in the building where she spent her formative years as a young member of the New Jersey Youth Symphony \ Martin Steinberg has been NJIO’s cello coach and principal cellist since 2005 and is founder of www.RomanzaMusicEvents.com , an award-winning musical ensemble that performs at private parties in New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, Connecticut and Delaware. He also has been teaching cello in South Orange, NJ, since 1995. Marty is the former principal cellist of the Baroque Orchestra of New Jersey and the Metropolitan Orchestra of West Orange, NJ, and has performed in such venues as Carnegie Hall, Avery Fisher Hall, Alice Tully Hall, Symphony Space, NJPAC and the publisher’s suite at The New York Times. He has participated in chamber music workshops in France, California, Vermont, Lincoln Center and New Jersey and has been coached by Ida Kavafian, Daniel Phillips, Robert Dodson, Joel Berman and Yehuda Hanani. Tom created and taught the “Exploring Music and Technology” class at Governor Livingston High School in Berkeley Heights, and has taught middle school band and general music as well. Tom has been teaching privately for over 30 years, teaching all levels and specializing in low brass and jazz improvisation. Additionally, Tom is an in-demand clinician, presenting workshops in New York, New Jersey and Pennsylvania. Tom Kamp is a band director for the Berkeley Heights (NJ) Public Schools. As a trombonist, Tom Kamp has performed, toured and recorded with the St. Louis Symphony Orchestra and was a featured soloist with the Jordan Thomas Orchestra at the NJ JazzFest in Madison, NJ. He is an active freelancer in the NY/NJ area, and has played in Carnegie Hall, the Hollywood Bowl, and Birdland jazz club in NYC. Tom is the founder, leader, trombonist, and composer/arranger for the ACME BRASS CO., an eight-piece brass with rhythm section group. Tom produced ACME BRASS’s first CD, entitled “X-MAS X-ING” which was released in 2004. Bassoonist Stephen Wisner received his Bachelors and Masters degrees at The University of Michigan, studying with L. Hugh Cooper. After graduation he moved to the NYC area and studied with Stephen Maxym (Juilliard School, Metropolitan Opera Orchestra) and pursued a career as a bassoonist. In the decades since Mr. Wisner has travelled and performed extensively with the New York City Opera National Company (principal bassoon), The Manhattan Wind Quintet, and The New York Symphonic Ensemble (traveling throughout Japan). In the New York area he enjoys playing in a wide variety of ensembles, ranging from Broadway pits, to several orchestras, mainly playing contrabassoon with the New Jersey Symphony Orchestra. Robert Wagner has been the New Jersey Symphony Orchestra Principal Bassoonist since 1979. He has performed as a soloist with the NJSO in bassoon concertos by Mozart, Weber and Vivaldi, as well as the Duo Concertino of Richard Strauss. He has toured extensively and recorded with the Orpheus Chamber Orchestra, and he has performed as a member of the Boehm Quintette and American Wind Quintet. Wagner graduated with both his Bachelor and Master of Music degrees from The Juilliard School. He teaches at Princeton University and serves on the boards of the League of American Orchestras and ArtPride New Jersey. He also teaches privately. Timpanist and Percussionist Adrienne Ostrander graduated with a Bachelor of Music degree from Indiana University School of Music. She has studied with George Gaber, Roland Kohloff, and Buster Bailey. As the timpanist/percussionist with Solid Brass, Adrienne has performed throughout the United States, Canada and Mexico and has made numerous recordings. She has performed on Broadway In Nine, Into the Woods, Sunday in the Park With Timpanist and Percussionist Adrienne Ostrander graduated with a Bachelor of Music degree from Indiana University School of Music. She has studied with George Gaber, Roland Kohloff, and Buster Bailey. As the timpanist/percussionist with Solid Brass, Adrienne has performed throughout the United States, Canada and Mexico and has made numerous recordings. She has performed on Broadway In Nine, Into the Woods, Sunday in the Park With George, Me and My Girl and Grand Hotel and in several productions at the Paper Mill Playhouse in Millburn, NJ. She regularly performs with the Princeton Symphony, Westminster Choir College, Plainfield Symphony, Central Jersey Symphony and the Concert Pops of Long Island. Her festival performances have taken her to Greece, Germany, Italy, Ireland, Yugoslavia, France, and Cuba. Ms. Ostrander has coached the New Jersey Youth Symphony and is the percussion instructor at the Stokes Forest Music Camp. Adrienne performs educational concerts in New Jersey schools with Young Audiences of New Jersey, Solid Brass, the New Philharmonic of New Jersey, Arts Horizons, Arts Alive, and BRAVO! She is a member of the award winning Rampant Lion Pipe Band of Basking Ridge New Jersey.
