Young Artist
Concerto Competition
Each spring, we hold the Young Artist Concerto Competition to select soloists for the following season. The competition is open to pianists and instrumental soloists in their junior year of high school and younger, and winners will win a monetary award and perform with NJIO the following season.

2026 Young Artist Concerto Competition Guidelines
Eligibility and Repertoire Requirements:
Prospective participants must be enrolled in grades 6 to 11 and residents of New Jersey. The chosen repertoire for the Concerto Competition must be suitable for performance with NJIO in terms of the instrumental requirements and the difficulty of the accompaniment. The accompaniment parts must also be available from some library, publisher, or other lending sources. All repertoire selections are subject to the approval of the NJIO Artistic Director before an audition will be scheduled. If you have any doubts about your chosen piece, be sure to contact Emily Kane in advance at ekane@njio.org

Scheduling an audition:
Auditionees must register prior to April 29th, 2026 for the competition date on May 13th. A non-refundable $40 registration fee is applicable. You will select your audition time (between 3:00-9:00pm) during the registration process.

Audition Details:
Participants can perform one or two movements, lasting 8 to 12 minutes. Participants must arrange their own accompanists. A grand piano is available. Auditions will take place at NJIO's rehearsal space at 36 Chatham Road, Summit (entrance in the back).

Selection and Winners:
The judging panel may choose not to select winners or may select multiple winners for the Concerto Competition. Successful candidates will be scheduled to perform with the Symphony Orchestra during the 2026-2027 season.

Winners' Responsibilities and Recognition:
Winners will receive an honorarium from NJIO and participate in various activities, including performing at a concert, attending rehearsals, and meeting with the conductor. Winners may be asked to perform a piece other than their audition piece. Winners are required to submit their bio and headshot by June 1, 2026.
