VISION STATEMENT
NJIO welcomes musicians of all ages and varying skill levels into a nurturing artistic environment. Through multiple ensembles, we encourage our diverse group of players to move along the musical continuum. Our members will grow musically from their NJIO interactions with musical professionals and each other, while advancing together towards the common goal of achieving artistic excellence within their capabilities.
NJIO believes that music performances are beneficial to everyone and endeavors to serve our communities by presenting both affordable-admission and free orchestral concerts, outreach performances and special events throughout New Jersey.
A GLIMPSE AT THE HISTORY OF NJIO
Founded in 1994 by string educator Lorraine Marks, the New Jersey Intergenerational Orchestra (NJIO) was created with the belief that music has the power to bring generations together. What began as a small gathering of more than 60 musicians of all ages has grown into a thriving organization of three orchestras and 100+ volunteer musicians, with members ranging in age from 5 to 93.

For more than 30 years, NJIO has fostered meaningful connections through music, creating opportunities for young and experienced musicians to learn from one another while building lasting friendships and strengthening communities. Guided by dedicated artistic leadership, the organization has remained true to its founding mission while continuing to grow in both size and artistic excellence.

NJIO has performed at renowned venues including the United Nations, the U.S. Capitol, Lincoln Center, and the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, as well as throughout communities across New Jersey. Its innovative intergenerational model has earned national recognition, including features in public television documentaries and selection as a finalist for the Eisner Prize for Intergenerational Excellence.

Today, NJIO continues its proud tradition of inspiring musicians of all ages, proving that music is a lifelong journey best shared across generations.
