The discussions of a possible collaboration between NJIO and Kean University began in the Fall of 2021. For many years Kean University students have participated in NJIO Ensembles. In Addition, NJIO's Artistic Director Warren Cohen once held the position of Orchestra Conductor at Kean. Through the years, Kean's music program went through some changes and in an effort to build their orchestra and string program a merger of the two organizations seemed to be the most obvious choice.
During the winter and spring of 2022 Alan Campell (board president), Warren Cohen (artistic director), and Michelle Tolentino (program director) met with Kean faculty, Dr. Matt Halper and Dr. Tom Conners to map out the beginning plans of this new orchestra. Several zoom meetings later and after many ideas and revisions, the plans for the NJIO Kean Chamber Orchestra were set.
We are thrilled to announce that the NJIO Kean Chamber Orchestra will begin in the Fall of 2022. This ensemble will carry NJIO's mission and philosophy. Rehearsals will match the University schedule and there will be two concerts a year. The Kean branch will rehearse on the University's campus. It is open to Kean students, members of the surrounding area, and current NJIO members (when space allows).
